HSBC to cut jobs in London-based equities team

first_img Show Comments ▼ Hannah Godfrey Tags: Company HSBC Holdings Share Friday 26 February 2021 4:55 pm whatsapp HSBC plans to cut jobs in its London-based equities division, in a further shake up to the UK office. The news comes as plans to “pivot to Asia” gain traction at the bank. Some senior Canary Wharf staff will move overseas to the likes of Hong Kong as the HSBC seeks to accelerate its presence in Asia. The job cuts are part of HSBC’s ongoing restructuring work, first announced in February 2020. City A.M. understands HSBC has not set a target figure for the number of job cuts. HSBC declined to comment. Relocating the bank’s top brass would mean business divisions that account for around 95 per cent of HSBC’s global revenue will be run out of Hong Kong rather than London. by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeBrake For ItSay Goodbye: These Cars Will Be Discontinued In 2021Brake For ItMoneyWise.comMechanics Say You Should Avoid These Cars In 2021  MoneyWise.comPost FunGreat Songs That Artists Are Now Embarrassed OfPost FunThe Legacy ReportMan Who Predicted 2020 Crash 45 Days Early Issues Next Major WarningThe Legacy ReportAtlantic MirrorA Kilimanjaro Discovery Has Proved This About The BibleAtlantic MirrorCarsGeniusThese 4 Loaded SUVs Are Now Dirt CheapCarsGeniusTaco RelishSuspicious Pics That Are Fishier Than The SeaTaco RelishLiver Health1 Bite of This Melts Belly And Arm Fat (Take Before Bed)Liver HealthVikings: Free Online GamePlay this for 1 minute and see why everyone is addictedVikings: Free Online Game In the last two days, the holdings company informed staff of its plans to make cuts to the London equities team, Financial News first reported. Fire marshal: Youths confess to Twin Lakes playground fire

first_imgCommunity | Crime & Courts | Juneau | Public SafetyFire marshal: Youths confess to Twin Lakes playground fireApril 25, 2017 by Jacob Resneck and Jeremy Hsieh, KTOO Share:Firefighters spray down a fire on Monday, April 24, 2017, at the playground near Twin Lakes. (Photo by Kelli Burkinshaw/KTOO)The two teenagers arrested for setting the Twin Lakes playground on fire Monday have confessed, and Juneau’s fire marshal has completed his investigation.Capital City Fire/Rescue Fire Marshal Dan Jager said the two teenagers admitted they started the fire with no clear motive.“They admitted as to how they did that,” Jager said. “Because they are juveniles and it’s still an open case, I’m not allowed to comment on that.”Jager also noted no accelerants — such as gasoline — were used.“The material on the playground itself, basically being shredded tires, that in itself is a fuel,” he said. “Between the wind and the fact you had basically the tire material burning, that, once it burns it turns into a liquid, so it’s kind of a petroleum product at that point. That’s really what caused the fire to intensify and spread across the playground as it did.”The many photos of the early stages of the fire shared through social media were critical in the investigation, Jager said. The images helped narrow down where the fire began and how it spread.Jager recommends using different materials if the playground is rebuilt.“Granted, it’s not as soft or easy to land on, but gravel doesn’t burn,” he said. “At least not that easily. Sand, gravel, things like that, stuff that’s noncombustible is the recommendation.”The Juneau Community Foundation is accepting donations to rebuild the playground.Editor’s note: The foundation has provided grants to 360 North for Gavel Alaska and maintains the KTOO Legacy Foundation fund.Share this story:last_img read more

How One Angeleno Stacked the Deck With Lotería for Millennials

first_imgPop CultureHow One Angeleno Stacked the Deck With Lotería for MillennialsYour parents might not ”get” this update on the classic game but that’s sort of the pointBy Pamela Avila – December 14, 20184733ShareEmailFacebookTwitterPinterestReddItWhen we think back on childhood family gatherings—whether it was the holidays, a cousin’s birthday party, or just another carne asada on the weekend—lotería (basically the Mexican version of bingo, but with a little more personality) always made an appearance at some point in the night. It wasn’t really a party until a game broke out. You’d grab your lucky tabla (a board made up of 16 randomized images from the deck of lotería cards), your quarters (if you were playing for money), and your small rocks, pennies, marbles, or beans to fill up your tabla. Like bingo, the game goes on until the first player fills up a row of four across in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line. And then you call out, “Buenas!” But in a new redesigned version of lotería, you instead call out “Yaaaaasssssssssss, Millennial Lotería!”Millennial Lotería creator Mike Alfaro wasn’t looking to remake the game, but rather create a parody of millennial life as seen through a Latinx lens. “I want Latinx millennials to be able to relate to the game in a more modern fashion, to to be able to share it with their friends,” he says.Courtesy of Mike Alfaro for Millennial LoteríaCourtesy of Mike Alfaro for Millennial LoteríaThe 29-year-old Guatemalan writer and creative director, alongside designer Gerardo Guillén, reimagined classic lotería cards like “La Dama” (The Lady) to now be “La Feminist,” they’ve also included an “El/La Gender Fluid” card, and instead of beans, you can use bitcoins to fill up your tabla. It’s safe to say that older generations won’t necessarily get the point of this modern take on the cards. But that’s the point. “It’s also a good way to start conversations with [our] parents about topics we don’t usually chat about,” Alfaro says. For example, now we can school them on what “El Tinder” or “El Safe Space” mean.Courtesy of Mike Alfaro for Millennial LoteríaBesides opening the door to more nuanced conversations with family members and friends, the game also addresses what Alfaro sees as a need for accurate representation of Latinx communities. “Latinx representation, especially of young immigrants like myself, has been severely lacking in pop culture,” Alfaro explains. “When they do portray us, it’s always in a negative and stereotypical fashion.” So he took matters into his own hands.“I wanted to make it more inclusive, not only in the diversity of our people, but also in the inclusiveness of the LGBT community, which is a big part of culture, especially here in Los Angeles,” he says.Last year, he released 1,000 copies of a limited-edition set, which he’d used his savings to create and produce. Alfaro thought it would take months to run out of the inventory, but every set sold out in fewer than four days. Before the official launch of Millennial Lotería on December 4, Alfaro had 10,000 preorders. Millennial Lotería has been an Amazon #1 Best Seller since its launch, and Alfaro believes that’s a testament to the power Latinx Millennials have and “how badly they want to be represented.”Starting in January 2019, Millennial Lotería will be sold at Urban Outfitters, Barnes & Noble, as well as mom-and-pop shops. In the coming year, he also has plans to release new cards through Instagram. The cards that get the most likes and comments will be added to upcoming expansion packs; people can weigh in on their faves at @millennialoteria.Courtesy of Mike Alfaro for Millennial LoteríaRELATED: A Map for the MillennialsStay up to date with everything you need to know about L.A. by following us on Facebook. Concussion researchers spark hope with a new tool to diagnose brain damage

first_img @ericboodman But with each head trauma, scientists think, some neurons release that tau into the rest of the brain, and as it moves around, bits of this protein get tangled and stuck together.“Once it gets a foothold, then its progression accelerates and even after you stop taking hits, it keeps accumulating and keeps getting worse,” said Eric Nauman, a biomedical engineer at Purdue University, who studies brain trauma. Those accumulations of tau are what pathologists are looking for during autopsies. And earlier this year, a group of the top brain scientists agreed that what distinguishes CTE from other tau-related disorders like Alzheimer’s is a peculiar pattern of protein buildup deep in the folds of the brain.Gandy looked for a way to pick up the same pattern while the patient was alive. To do that, he used a molecule — what scientists call a ligand — that is safe to inject but would also stick onto the tangles of tau.“The shape of the tau in the normal neurons is basically like a piece of spaghetti,” he said. “With the tangles, it’s twisted and kinked, and it’s those kinks where the ligand binds.” The diagnosis begins with the brain being pulled out of the skull. Then, to determine whether someone had a condition associated with repeated concussions, the pathologist preserves the tissue in formalin, slices it thin enough for light to shine through, washes it with chemicals, and peers at it through a microscope. If some areas remain blotched with reddish brown, then the pathologist can definitively diagnose the person with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE.The procedure has helped scientists advance their understanding of the condition but it has done little to help thousands of football players, former service members, and others who have CTE.advertisement Eric Boodman Tags concussionsCTEfootball After a public fall, the face of NFL concussion denial resurfaces Blood test shows evidence of concussion up to a week after injury The stakes for this science are high. CTE is an incurable neurodegenerative disease that has been associated with everything from depression, anxiety, and aggression to progressive, Alzheimer’s-like dementia. So a diagnosis is not something to take lightly — and could be disastrous if gotten wrong.advertisement “There are cases out there, unfortunately, of people who were convinced they had CTE and committed suicide, and then were found in autopsy not to have CTE,” said Dr. Christopher Giza, director of the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT program, who was not involved in the study. It’s hard to say exactly how good the new diagnostic test might be because this study was conducted on just one retired NFL player, and he is still alive.“These findings in this patient strongly suggest a diagnosis — they probably have CTE — but we can’t definitely say that without an autopsy,” said Dr. Cyrus Raji, a CTE researcher at the University of California, San Francisco, who was also not involved in the study. Alex Hogan, Hyacinth Empinado/STAT CTE was first described in 1928, when a pathologist coined the term “punch-drunk” to talk about how repeated head-bashings affected boxers. The more official diagnosis of dementia pugilistica — literally, “fighters’ dementia” — was subsequently found in cases of physical abuse, epilepsy, rugby, and even “dwarf-throwing.” But it was only described in football players in 2005.For years, the National Football League resisted science showing that repeatedly hitting your head may cause lasting brain damage.Neurologists think that the brain damage associated with CTE is linked to a protein called tau, which is an essential part of normal, healthy neurons. “The structure is maintained by an internal skeleton of the nerve cell, and that skeleton is composed of tau,” explained Dr. Samuel Gandy, the Mount Sinai neurologist who led the new study. Wherever these radioactive chains got stuck was a tangle of tau. And in this patient, the tangles of tau were strikingly similar to the pattern seen during autopsies that allows for an official diagnosis. The patient is a 39-year-old retired NFL player who has complained mostly of poor moods and episodes of rage. “He certainly is not demented. He runs his own business. He’s independent and functional and has a family,” said Gandy. While the new study may represent a step forward, it will not be accepted as diagnostic tool until a large study is done of both affected and non-affected brains, while the patients are alive and then after death. “On the basis of that test, you’re going to make a pretty important determination: ‘You’re depressed because you need to see a therapist or need medication,’ or ‘You’re depressed because you have an incurable degenerative disease.’ I would want to be very, very convinced before I declare judgment on patients one way or another,” said Giza, of UCLA.In spite of the uncertainty, Gandy said, 100 service members have already come forward, wanting to be scanned. The first ones will visit his clinic in October.Correction: A previous version of this article mischaracterized the relationship between CTE and symptoms such as depression, anxiety, aggression, and dementia.  [email protected] On Tuesday, researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York reported they had developed a potential method to diagnose CTE while patients are still alive. Instead of taking out the brain to douse it and slice it, doctors inject chemicals that will flow up into the brain, and then send the patient into a brain scanner.
