Jeep adds its EcoDiesel V6 to the Gladiator lineup

first_img When Jeep introduced the Gladiator pickup truck for 2020, fans were treated to a product for which they had been asking for ages. Another item on their wish list was checked off today, when Jeep officially announced the Gladiator will be available this fall with a torquey diesel engine. How torquey? Try 442 lb.-ft. of twist, a sum that should be sufficient to haul Gladiator up and out of the toughest obstacles at Moab. Or at least, enough to dislodge the Oakleys off Chad’s head. This new EcoDiesel will be paired exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and will be — praise the pharaohs — offered across three trims: Sport, Overland, and Rubicon. The 3.0L V6 will also make 260 horsepower and, thanks to an engine start-stop system, is emboldening Jeep to claim this Gladiator will post fuel economy ratings capable of delivering the highest driving range on one tank of fuel ever for Gladiator. Assuming the diesel retains the gas-powered truck’s 82-litre fuel tank, this means it’s expected to beat the manual, gas-powered, 3.6L V6 Gladiator’s highway rating of 10.4 L/100 kilometres. Currently, the Mojave and Sport trims equipped with the Max Tow package have 4.10 gears. The Rock-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range gear ratio is standard on Rubicon models, and the part-time Command-Trac two-speed transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range gear ratio is on Sport and Overland models. For comparison’s sake, the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 found in the Ram 1500 makes the same amount of horsepower, but an extra 38 lb.-ft. of torque. Across town, the inline-four Duramax diesel found in GM midsize pickups is rated at 181 ponies and 369 lb.-ft of twist. It’s also available across the range, including the most off-road focused trims, but its automatic transmission only has six cogs.
