MTV Election Coverage is a Coup for Citizen Journalism

first_imgjosh catone 1 Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Tags:#politics#web As part of MTV’s coverage of the 2008 presidential elections in the US, the media network assembled a “street team” of 51 amateur journalists — one in each state and the District of Columbia — to file blog reports, photos, videos, and audio podcasts about election issues during the course of the campaign season. The videos are being syndicated to MTV’s mobile web site, social network, and to the Associate Press Online Video Network. Members of the street team have been outfitted with laptops, video phones, and other popular tools of the citizen journalist via funding from a $700,000 grant from the John L. and James S. Knight Foundation’s Knight News Challenge. For Super Tuesday (February 5), in which 23 states in the US hold primary elections, Caroline McCarthy reports that MTV will be leaning heavily on their citizen journalism street team. Members of the team in the 23 voting states will be filing live video field reports via Nokia N95 handsets. As McCarthy notes, this is the first time MTV has done live mobile-to-web video reporting. The N95, as readers of this blog will recall, is also being used by Reuters as part of a “Mobile Journalism Toolkit,” which some Reuters field reporters are testing to help them file stories from the field and use the cell phone’s camera to take photos and videos of news events. This is all part of a growing trend toward legitimizing citizen journalism and the embrace by mainstream media of amateur journalism’s tools and techniques.“‘Citizen journalism’ is beginning to embrace a wide range of public engagement with the media,” said Timo Koskinen, project manager with Nokia Research Center when the mobile toolkit was announced, “from groups of contributors organized around subject or geographic areas to the casual participation of observers who are lucky – or unlucky – enough to be at the scene of a newsworthy event.”Yesterday we wrote about Twitter’s growing influence in the reporting of news and its use by mainstream news reporters as an information distribution tool. It is interesting that while MTV is building technology to instantly stream live mobile video reports from amateur reporters in 23 states, they’re apparently not planning to use Twitter. Those reporters will have cell phones, afterall, making them more than capable of Twittering.MTV has actually used Twitter before. About 4 months ago during the Video Music Awards, MTV set up a handful of Twitter accounts to stream live updates from the awards show floor. Though it featured mostly inane updates from artists and hosts, like Lil’ Wayne saying, “Yo we just left the awards It was crazzzzy,” it at least shows that MTV is open to trying out new tools to push information to users. Though their Twitter experiment at the VMAs resulted in sub-par content (in my opinion), it was a modest success, attracting almost 1500 followers on their main account.Twitter or not, though, MTV’s emphasis on streaming mobile video next Tuesday, and their continued use of amateur journalists during the 2008 election cycle is part of a growing trend that is pushing citizen journalism into the mainstream and increasing its impact on how we report and consume news. Pachube Acquired: Why Did It Sell So Early?

first_imgMy favorite startup in the fast emerging Internet of Things market, London-based Pachube, has been acquired by Woburn, Massachusetts-based LogMeIn. The deal is worth “approximately $15 million in cash,” some of it dependent on performance. LogMeIn provides provides cloud-based remote access solutions, such as the remote PC control app Ignition that we wrote about earlier this month. Pachube (pronounced Patch-Bay) is a platform for connecting people and devices to the Internet. The acquisition allows LogMeIn to extend its reach beyond computers, smartphones and tablets to “potentially all Internet-connectable devices.” For Pachube, it allows them to scale up its operations.I’m rather surprised that Pachube sold itself so early. Since its founding in 2008, Pachube has aimed to be the leading open development platform for the Internet of Things – and it appeared to be building that out quite nicely. So why didn’t it continue to ramp up independently, potentially becoming a much more valuable platform in a few years? One hint about why Pachube sold now is in the press release: “LogMeIn will absorb approximately $1 million per quarter in ongoing operating costs related to the operation of the Pachube business.”$1 million per quarter in operating costs is a lot of money and it’s likely that Pachube was struggling to match it on revenue. According to the press release today, Pachube users send more than seven million datapoints to the service each day. This data comes from sensors, devices and environments. So infrastructure and bandwidth costs would have been not insignificant. Tags:#Internet of Things#NYT#web What Was Pachube’s Business Model?Did Pachube have a sufficient business model? It’s something we’ve constantly asked the company about and monitored over time. We first covered Pachube in May 2009, at which point its business model was still in development. Pro accounts, tools and applications for medium-scale manufacturers and developers, involvement in large-scale urban infrastructure projects and a secret “killer” business model in development were the four things listed at the time. In October of 2009, I explored Pachube’s business model further in an interview with company founder Usman Haque. He explained that Pachube’s business model at that point was predicated on the following theory: if you want a free service, then data will be open; but if you want privacy, that’s what you will pay for.“Privacy is the most valuable model,” said Usman Haque in October 2009. The company hoped that Pachube users would be willing to pay for privacy features, along with increased bandwidth and other extras.Update: Usman Haque told ReadWriteWeb after this post was published that the “open data ecosystem” is currently Pachube’s main business model focus. I’ve requested further details. However, revenue figures were conspicuously absent from the announcement today. It’s likely that Pachube never found a great business model that would allow it to continue scaling. Hence, why it sold now, relatively early in its life cycle.Having said that, I’m happy that the Pachube dream is still alive and will probably flourish inside a bigger company like LogMeIn. At this year’s CTIA E-Tech awards, LogMeIn was the winner in the Productivity, Utility and Public Safety section. So it’s obviously no technology slouch and will offer a good home for Pachube.Pachube was one of ReadWriteWeb’s top Internet of Things companies of 2009 and 2010, so we want to see it continue to grow and scale. Let us know your thoughts on the acquisition in the comments. Referee Upgrade for All!

first_imgThis weekend from Port Macquarie to Perth, referees will all be getting an upgrade! The New South Wales Junior State Cup and the WA State Championships will be the first opportunity for the new referee uniform to be worn. After a long consultation process and design phase the new kit will make its debut on close to 400 referees. The new design is in line with the national programs and Australian playing design as well as being high tech with respect to the fabric utilised to provide maximum comfort. In the coming week a new ordering platform direct with national sponsor KooGa will be launched making it easier than ever to obtain uniforms. The referee uniform will be worn at all levels and will replace the various styles in circulation in due course.  This will mean that there are no extra uniform costs associated with transition from the park through to the national level.  TFA will be working through allocations to referees to minimise the cost of such a replacement as well as applying flexibility at the national events through the panel to manage the use of the old and the new as it is phased in.TFA would like to thank the feedback of the Referee Panel as well as the National Referee Squad who assisted in providing feedback as well as broader consultation.  We would also especially like to thank TFA Board member, Barry McNamara, and Anthony Smith for the leadership role they played in this process.Stay tuned to the website for the launch of the online shop –  www.austouch.com.au.Related LinksReferee Uniformslast_img read more
