first_imgWomen’s Tennis Splits in Spring Season Opener Argos are now 1-1 overall, but 1-0 in conference Share PENSACOLA, Fla.-  The No. 2 UWF Women’s Tennis (1-1, 1-0) split their spring season home opener with a loss against No. 17 Florida Southern College (2-0) 4-3 and a win against University of  Alabama Huntsville (2-3) 6-1 at the Ralph “Skeeter” Carson Tennis Complex in back to back matches on Saturday.UWF v. FSC  (4-3)The ladies started off in a 1-0 deficit after being swept in doubles play. Selin Devrimci and Minnie Kim defeated Valeria Mantilla and Jennifer Rink  in the No.1 spot 6-0, and was followed by Gabby Hesse and Natalija Popovic defeating Gabriela Araujo and Karolina Silwanowicz 6-2 and clinching doubles. This left  Berta Bonardi and Diana Vlad’s game unfinished.Knowing that there was ground to make up, the Argos quickly rolled into singles.First to finish was Araujo at the sixth spot where she lost 6-1, 6-3. She was followed by Rink at No.2 who also lost 6-4, 6-2. With these two points for the Mocs, all they need was one more to clinch the match, but nationally ranked No.1 Bonardi was not going to let the Argos go down easy. She won in the first spot 6-2, 7-5 giving the Argos hope that it wasn’t over. Nationally ranked at No. 29 Silwanowicz, followed Bonardi with a win 7-6, 6-3 making it a 3-2 match. Vlad came out on top next after a hard battle in the fifth spot winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. This tied the match leaving only the fourth spot playing which ended with Florida Southern’s Magda Stepnik defeating Heather Mixon 7-5, 7-5 in a long and well fought game.Overall the Argos fought hard, but were ready to come out in the next match hungry for a win.UWF v. UAH (6-1)The West Florida women’s tennis team was fired up and ready for a win in their full day of tennis. The doubles team’s saw a little pairing change, but still the same outcome. Mariana Lopez and Sarah Stearman of UAH defeated Calves and Silwanowicz 6-3. This time the loss was followed by a win from the second team of Bonardi and Vlad 6-3. The doubles team Mantilla and Rink couldn’t pull through and lost 6-3.Singles play begun with the Charger off to a 1-0 lead but were unaware that it would be their only point of the match.
