Monitor’s investigation concluded “that the trust lacks the adequate financial control it requires. It has failed to deliver the necessary savings and has not submitted a credible plan to address its rapidly growing deficit”.Read more: Here’s how to put patients at the heart of healthcareDespite the high level of spending, staff shortages meant there was not enough cover on wards and delays in outpatient treatment, as well as governance failures.Cambridge University Hospitals Trust, which runs Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie Birth Centre, which is also being put in special measures, was inspected in April and May by the Care Quality Commission.Sir Mike Richards, the Care Quality Commissions’ chief inspector of hospitals, criticised the trust’s management as “staff felt that senior managers were unaware of the issues they faced”.  Sharecenter_img whatsapp whatsapp Show Comments ▼last_img read more

Why every clinical trial should have an app for participants

first_img Tags clinical trialsdrug makerspatients Glen de Vries We are well into the era of the engaged consumer. By now, many companies have recognized that traditional selling tactics like advertising and discounting only take them so far. Consumers want deeper connections, and companies ranging from Amazon and Apple to Spotify and Zappos have been happy to oblige. Using predictive algorithms that prioritize consumer preferences, these companies are finding inventive new ways to engage customers with games, stories, and sharing tools sent to their mobile devices.Pharmaceutical companies should be doing the same thing. But many of them aren’t, or aren’t doing it well. For 16 years, I’ve witnessed their halting efforts to engage consumers from my vantage point as the cofounder and president of a cloud technology company that helps life science organizations better design, manage, and execute clinical trials.A clinical trial is often the first chance that a pharmaceutical company has to engage with individuals who may one day be their customers. Many companies ignore this opportunity. By doing so, they fail to gather invaluable information about the effectiveness and safety of their products and the responsiveness and progress of the people taking them.advertisement By Glen de Vries April 5, 2016 Reprints In a clinical trial, what does an engaged consumer look like? He or she feels confident of having an open, consistent dialogue with doctors and clinicians; intimately understands the purpose of the trial and his or her role in it; and is committed to following study protocols, making follow-up visits, and ultimately completing the trial.Few pharmaceutical companies do enough to help study participants meet this level of engagement. Consider these facts about clinical trials: The average dropout rate is around 30 percent, and about 80 percent of clinical trials don’t finish on time. A key contributor to both of these problems is poor patient engagement. Some participants drop out of trials for reasons a sponsor can’t control, like negative reactions to a treatment. Far more often, the sponsors aren’t doing enough to educate participants, make it easy for them to follow the study protocols, or motivate them to stay engaged.advertisement About the Author Reprintscenter_img Some drug companies have taken baby steps toward engagement by launching patient-focused apps after getting approval for their drugs. By then, it’s too late.Fortunately, technologies available today have enormous potential to improve the quality of clinical research and the level of patient engagement. Devices like Fitbit or Jawbone can do a lot more than tell you how many steps you’ve taken or how well you are sleeping. They can also provide a more precise understanding of how an individual responds to treatment during a clinical trial. Meanwhile, emerging software platforms like Apple’s CareKit will help developers and health care professionals create new interactive health care-related apps. These tools can make it easier for clinical trial sponsors to improve engagement, whether it’s making participation easier by reducing the need for trips to a clinic or providing reminders for taking medicines in the right dose at the right time.Clinical trials are the perfect environment in which to identify and focus on successful patient engagement strategies. For any pharmaceutical company or clinical trial sponsor looking to improve patient engagement, three priorities are key:Act now. The FDA requires that all new therapeutics be tested in a rigorous, three-phase process. Engagement should be baked into this process from the start. The best time to study patients’ habits, preferences, and behaviors is during a trial as participants use the new drug, not after it has been approved.Be objective. Clinical trial research often ignores objective measures about participants’ quality of life and instead relies on subjective data collected in surveys. Today’s mobile technologies let researchers continuously collect consistent, reliable, objective information about things that are meaningful to participants, such as the quality of their sleep or their ability to walk through the grocery store without fatigue.Go with what works and what patients know. Pharmaceutical companies needn’t completely reinvent the customer engagement experience. People are increasingly and habitually using tools such as smartphone apps and activity trackers. The challenge for pharmaceutical companies is to keep up with the pace of digital innovation and understand the way new technologies can be used to reduce the burden that a clinical trial can place on participants. To combine emerging digital technologies with traditional clinical measurements and techniques, existing hardware and software must be adapted for clinical use. There is clearly a lot of work to be done, but we already have the tools to increase patient engagement for new drugs. The key is to start early in the process.Glen de Vries is president and cofounder of Medidata, which provides a cloud platform and data analytics for life science organizations conducting clinical research. OTC derivatives markets growing in 2019

first_img James Langton Trading in global FX and OTC derivatives ramping up Over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives activity surged in the first half of 2019, according to the latest data from the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).The BIS reported that notional amounts of OTC derivatives rose from $544 trillion (all figures in U.S. dollars) at the end of 2018 to $640 trillion at the end of June. Part of the increase reflects normal seasonality. But even accounting for this, notional amounts are up, reaching their highest level since 2014.Interest rate derivatives are driving the increase in notional amounts, the BIS said.Foreign exchange derivatives are also up, but notional amounts of other types have been declining since the financial crisis, it says, led by credit derivatives. The gross market value of OTC derivatives also rose in the first six months of 2019, the BIS said, rising from $9.7 trillion to $12.1 trillion over the first half. The increase in market value was primarily driven by euro-denominated interest rate derivative contracts, it said, although U.S. dollar contracts also rose. The gross market value of foreign exchange and credit derivatives remained relatively stable in the first half of 2019, the BIS said. And, it reports that gross credit exposures also rose in the first half of 2019.This is the first time gross credit exposures increased since mid-2016. Yet, as a share of gross market value, gross credit exposures are down from 24% to 22% over that period. Country has Adequate Supply of Food – Paulwell

first_imgFacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Minister of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce, Phillip Paulwell, has said that normality is being restored to the commercial sector in the wake of Hurricane Dean and there is adequate supply of food items. The Minister, who chaired a meeting with major distributors and importers of food items and lumber today (Aug. 21) at his PCJ offices in Kingston, said that based on an assessment and reports given by the distributors, the country has sufficient supply of chicken.“Manufacturers are very confident that with the current storage and live birds that are in stock, we should not see a shortage of chicken meat in this period. In fact, we should have quite a large supply of chicken meat,” he said, adding that eggs are also in adequate supply. He noted that while there seemed to have been minimal damage to the coops and the birds during the hurricane, “some farmers we know were affected and we are going to work to try to restore them as quickly as possible.”In relation to other proteins, Minister Paulwell said, “we are satisfied that the distributors have sufficient quantities of tin mackerel, sardine, corned beef and they also have adequate supplies of salted fish and pickled mackerel.”Dry goods such as flour, cornmeal, and rice will also be available, he indicated. “We have received the assurance from the (Jamaica) Flour Mill that they do have sufficient quantities on hand and that imports will be arriving. The stock on hand will take us through to the first week of September, by which time imports would be here and they are relying on the restoration of electricity to the trade,” Mr. Paulwell said.In terms of hardware items, Minister Paulwell informed that while assessments are being done to determine the level of damage to roofs, there are adequate supplies of lumber, ply and zinc.“We anticipate that in relation to zinc, we might have to increase our production locally or do some imports, but that will come in the wake of the assessment. We are also looking at the question of glass as well to see what we have to do,” he said.In the meantime, the Minister informed that the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) has established a hotline (1-888-991-4470) for persons to report any shortage of goods or any issues in relation to pricing and related consumer matters. He pointed out that the CAC “has not received any complaints about price gouging and we have not received any complaints about marrying of goods.” “We believe that normality is being restored very quickly to the commercial sector of the country. As we anticipate restoration of electricity in the industrial belt, we believe that this will enable the quicker restoration of supplies,” Mr. Paulwell said. Without this, revenue was down 2 per cent due to declines in its domestic market, Sweden. In its earnings statement, Tele2 President and CEO Anders Nilsson (pictured) noted efforts to integrate Com Hem progressed faster than expected during the quarter, with SEK100 million of cost synergies generated “mainly related to headcount reductions across the Swedish organisation” combined with structural changes to “improve collaboration across the network, IT and commercial departments”.Tele2 also conducted a rebranding campaign and began heavily promoting FMC services in Sweden as part of a strategy to generate revenue growth by expanding subscriber numbers and lowering prices. Nilsson said it also embarked on an “audit of our mobile and IP core networks” to improve reliability and “find potential improvements in our processes” in the country.MarketsWith work to optimise its geographic footprint completed, Nilsson said Tele2 is now well placed to generate “sustainable revenue growth and cash flow generation” from core Baltic Sea markets: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Combined, these markets generated a 6 per cent year-on-year increase in end-user service revenue during the quarter, which was offset by a 2 per cent annual decline in Sweden for a net reduction of 1 per cent. The operator is taking steps to “ensure that we have the most reliable and cost-efficient networks in the countries where we operate”, Nilsson said, highlighting the establishment of a joint venture with Bite covering Latvia and Lithuania as an example.Net profit grew from SEK443 million in Q218 to SEK2.1 billion in the recent period, although this figure included an SEK1.6 billion capital gain related to the sale of its business in Kazakhstan less a goodwill impairment of SEK500 million covering its Estonia operation.
